Glossary of Instructional Strategies

Graphic Novel

This assignment was a component of a course that explored emerging and assistive technologies in education. Students investigated and analyzed innovative educational technologies to determine their educational value. The skills needed for effective planning and leadership to integrate and evaluate these emerging technologies were developed as a result. Students also examined assistive technology and its application within instructional programs that assist those with disabilities. Students learned about specific assistive technology applications and became familiar with federal legislation and public policy for accommodating those with special needs.

Each student wrote a chapter as part of a graphic novel project.  Each student researched a disability and created a character that reflected that disability in a social setting. As a group they decided to utilize a playground setting and individually they researched a specific disability for their character. The character had to reflect the disability throughout their chapter. In order to assist classmates with integrating the character s they invented, each student designed a “characteristics statistical card” (similar to a baseball stats card) which highlighted distinctiveness of their character and included a picture. Each character had to interact with one or more characters created by classmates. Each student worked on a storyboard and consulted with the developers of other characters so that the story line was “true” to character. As a group they decided to have a “moderator” who added to the flow from chapter to chapter and also acted as a coach in each chapter. Additional information is provided in the Introduction and Afterword sections.
