Personal Attendant
I am Melissa Delaney, mother of a 13-year old autistic boy.  We live in the Holleybrooke subdivision of Spotsylvania.  Our son, RH, has been attending The Faison School for Autism in Richmond since 2005.  He has been approved for participation in the state's DD Waiver Program.  One of the benefits he has been approved for is 20 hours a week of personal attendant (PA) support and 720 hours of respite care per year.  Our first applicant for the job backed out at the last minute and we are trying to locate suitable candidates.
One of the suggestion given by our case manager was to contact the university and see if they had any education or psychology students who might want to gain experience working with an autistic child.  The hours will be flexible as we have two other sons (9 and 11) and one on the way in June.  The position is compensated at $11.14 per hour, paid every two weeks by the State of Virginia.  Applicants are subject to criminal background child registry checks (state requirement).
Below is a basic description of the duties associated with the position.  If you have any students interested have them contact me or my husband (Roy) at 540-786-8990.  We are willing to hire more than one PA for added flexibility - splitting hours, accounting for back up, etc.  Please let us know if there is a more appropriate method for asking for this type of support.  We appreciate any other ideas you may have on potential applicants.

Personal Attendant for Autistic Teenager.  Personal Attendant (PA) needed to assist 13-year old Autistic boy with with daily activities.  PA must be 18-years old. The PA must be willing to do the following:
Assist with play activities (puzzles, board games, coloring)
Assist with physical activities (walking, bicycling, catch)
Assist in attending extracurricular activities (Boy Scout meetings, events)
Assist with basic toileting needs
Assist in eating properly (make sure he is aware that food has been provided, proper use of utensils, remind him to clean up)
Assist with proper wear of clothing
Assist with attending siblings' sporting events as a spectator
Provide for basic safety
Additional duties as negotiated (respite care provider, etc.)
Sincerely,
Melissa Delaney
