Attendant Care for Boy with ASD |
We are looking for
someone to accompany and work with our son beginning
in May 2010. He is thirteen years old and is
currently a 7th grader at Dixon-Smith Middle
School. He has an autism spectrum disorder but is
currently in a mainstream classroom with special
education support. He is tall for his age. He
likes legos and other building toys. He has a good
sense of fun and play but limited conversational
skills. He loves animals and reading his
magazines. His medical diagnosis is Pervasive
Developmental Disorder - Not Otherwise Specified (PDD-NOS).
We live near Fredericksburg in Stafford
County.
Pay is $11.47/hour. Application forms and
background check are required. Experience is
preferred, but not required. No special training is
required. The position would begin this May and go
over the summer with the possibility it could
continue into next school year as well.
Through the end of this school year (June 18), the
position would be part-time, primarily after school
(approximately 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.) helping with
homework and engaging him in activities (indoors and
out). You would also be transporting him home from
school or the YMCA and to occupational therapy so
you would need your own transportation.
Over the summer, the position would be a roughly
equal mix of part-time and full time. It would be
part-time during those days he is involved in summer
camp, primarily before and after camp. It would be
more full-time those days he is not involved in
summer camp, accompanying him through a mix of
structured and unstructured activities. Activities
may include LibertyTown Arts class, Young Chef's
Academy, and Parks and Recreation programs. We have
some ideas for activities but would welcome your
suggestions. Again, you would need your own
transportation to take him to/from daily activities.
This position requires responsibility, reliability,
patience, persistence, a positive, easy-going
attitude, and a sense of fun. We would prefer
someone
comfortable in the water as swimming is likely to be
a regular activity. We would also prefer someone
who enjoys outdoor sports and activities as well
as indoor games and crafts.
If interested, please contact us at any of the
following:
Email: teamelmby@gmail.com or james.elmlinger@navy.mil
Phone: (540) 653-2018 (daytime) or (540) 373-6247

weekends or occasional evenings). We will hire
multiple individuals and work around schedules.

paid by Medicaid to the attendant.
Role of the Care

This is a job primarily to assist in the home but
also at times, in the greater community. As such,
parents will sometimes be in the home and
interacting with the child and attendant as well.
